Located on St. Simons Island, Georgia, Cannon’s Point Preserve is a peninsula that extends toward Little St. Simons Island and is linked with the lower Altamaha River delta. The tract protected by a Conservation Easement contains approximately 444 acres of globally imperiled maritime forest. Cannon’s Point is rich in plant and wildlife habitat important to native and migratory species that pass along the Atlantic Flyway twice annually. The peninsula upland is bounded by over six miles of shoreline adjacent to salt marsh, tidal creeks and rivers. Extensive historic ruins and prehistoric sites including shell middens dating back 4,000 years are found on the protected property.

The overarching goal in protecting Cannon’s Point Preserve is protection and enhancement of the health of

• Rare species and natural communities;
• Biodiversity; and
• Ecological processes.
• An additional conservation purpose is to provide environmental, historical, cultural, and conservation-related educational, research, and recreational opportunities.

This unique property is protected in perpetuity by a conservation easement, offering an abundance of research opportunities. These opportunities include both the natural and cultural resources.

Citizen scientists are always welcome and we encourage visitors to record data such as flowering plants and wildlife sightings to help build our database while they are out on the property. You can visit the Georgia Pacific Education Pavilion by the parking area and record your sightings.

Please remember no collection is permitted at the Preserve. Take only pictures, leave only footprints.
