The Land Trust mourns the passing of Dr. Nicholas Honerkamp on October 6. Nick was one of the original members of the Cannon’s Point Preserve History Task Force and a longtime friend, advocate, and valued advisor to the Preserve.
As a professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Nick brought multiple archaeology field schools to Cannon’s Point Preserve, creating meaningful educational opportunities for students and volunteers through hands-on archaeological research. His work not only provided invaluable field experience for numerous participants but also deepened our understanding of the Preserve’s cultural history, generating important information to help guide its ongoing management.
Nick’s dedication to archaeological research, education, and Cannon’s Point Preserve leaves a lasting legacy. While we have lost a trusted advisor, dear friend, and respected researcher, we are deeply grateful that the knowledge gained through his work will continue to inform and support the stewardship of this special place for years to come.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Nick’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. He will be greatly missed.
