Bob Sattelmeyer is Regents’ Professor Emeritus at Georgia State University, where he taught American literature and served in various administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of English and Director of the Honors College. Since retiring in 2012, he and his wife, Leigh Kirkland, have been active and loyal supporters of many local nonprofits and activities, including Bob’s longtime service as a member of the Land Trust’s Stewardship Committee, a volunteer at Cannon’s Point Preserve, and a member of our Board of Directors. Bob and Leigh have also been active with the Glynn Visual Arts, 100 Miles, and the St. Simons Community Garden. Bob is also President of the Coastal Georgia Audubon Society, and frequently leads birding field trips at Cannon’s Point Preserve, Guale Preserve, and other island properties. He is especially interested in and knowledgeable about the conservation of birds and the rare and sensitive habitats that are required of native and migratory birds on the Georgia coast.
“In a very real way, the St. Simons Island Land Trust is continuing the legacy of William Bartram by helping to preserve this landscape whose beauty and uniqueness he first brought to national and international attention.”
